France National Day: Celebrating a Nuclear Powerhouse with Global Oil and Gas Reach As France celebrates its National Day, its energy profile reflects a striking contrast. Domestic oil production is only about 12,000 barrels per day, meeting roughly 1% of national petroleum demand, while conventional gas production is now negligible following the decline of the historic Lacq field. France has nevertheless produced approximately 100 million tonnes of oil and 300 billion cubic metres of gas over its hydrocarbon history. France’s global oil and gas influence is driven largely by TotalEnergies, established in 1924 and now operating in about 120 countries. In 2025, the company produced approximately 2.53 million barrels of oil equivalent per day net, comprising 1.53 million barrels per day of liquids and 5.4 billion cubic feet per day of gas. Its largest producing country was the United Arab Emirates at about 393,000 boe/d, followed by Norway, Nigeria, Qatar, Brazil and Angola. TotalEnergies remains strategically important to France through employment, tax contributions, investment, technology and global energy-security reach. France’s strongest domestic energy advantage is its low-carbon electricity system. In 2025, approximately 95% of electricity generation came from nuclear and renewable sources. Nuclear supplied about 68%, hydropower approximately 11%, wind around 9%, and solar about 6%, while gas, oil and coal contributed only a small share. Bioenergy also supports electricity, heat, transport fuels and waste-to-energy production. France may be a small oil and gas producer, but its nuclear capability, diversified renewable resources and ownership of one of the world’s largest integrated energy companies make it one of the most influential energy nations globally.
