Insights from four thematic areas #WorldRefugeeDay: 🌱Driving the Cooking Transition in Kakuma & Kalobeyei With nearly 80–90% of households in #Kakuma and #Kalobeyei still reliant on biomass, local enterprises and humanitarian partners are spearheading a massive shift toward cleaner, safer, and more efficient cooking technologies. ✅Here is how key partners are driving this transition on the ground: Pioneering E-Cooking: Mwangaza Light, the Kenya SOLCO Partnership lead, is demonstrating the viability of induction stoves, with households reporting smoke-free homes and reduced cooking times. Simultaneously, Nyalore Impact Limited is training local technicians to repair electric pressure cookers (EPCs) and exploring institutional EPC solutions for schools. Transforming Institutional Energy: UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is leading the transition of 31 schools from firewood-reliant cooking to solarisation. By prioritising an 'energy-as-a-service' model, this initiative aims to create sustainable and financially viable cooking frameworks for public institutions.👏✅ Local production by RLOs: Utilising prosopis for briquette production and manufacturing improved cookstoves, RAFIKI WA MAZINGIRA Limited and GREEN AT MIND are working to create locally-produced alternatives for both host and refugee communities. 💡Moving forward, the GPA will be recommending technical support and detailed financial analysis to address commercial viability challenges and shift focus toward higher-value business models. Integrated Support: The transition is supported by behaviour change campaigns, consumer financing, and technical training to move beyond pilot programmes and towards sustainable, market-based models. ⚡ The path forward, driven by data-driven adoption, local repair capacity, and collaborative planning between private enterprises and county authorities, is vital for a healthier, more sustainable future for the region. This activity is supported by the generous funding from EU Civil Protection & Humanitarian Aid, EU in Emergencies.💡🙏 Read our recent blog here: https://lnkd.in/eniFXV2P NORCAP - part of the Norwegian Refugee Council Last Mile Climate Renewvia Energy Joelle Hangi, Iwona Bisaga, PhD, Elif Gül Demir, Paul Quigley, IKEA Foundation, Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, UNOPS. #UntilEveryoneIsSafe #CleanCooking #EnergyGPA #HumanitarianEnergy #RenewableEnergy #TurkanaCounty #RefugeeInclusion #EUHumanitarianAid #EUCivilProtection 📷Thank you for the photos to: Ayuen Isaac, Last Mile Climate; GREEN AT MIND; RAFIKI WA MAZINGIRA Limited; Nyalore Impact Limited.
