As Europe faces another heat wave 🄵 , the need to transform our cities has never been clearer. Becoming fossil-free is not only about cutting emissions, it is also about building more resilient cities. This means going beyond improving the energy performance of individual buildings, it requires transforming entire districts by combining deep building renovation šŸ—ļø with the decarbonisation of heating and cooling systems ā™»ļø as a first step. Cities have many levers to accelerate this transition, from one-stop shops that support residents through renovations and citizen-centred policies to phasing out fossil fuels in district heating and cooling networks and supporting local energy communities. But making it happen requires integrated planning. That was the focus of our capacity-building workshop in Vilnius šŸ‡±šŸ‡¹, where public servants from across Europe exchanged experiences and learned from the Lithuanian capital's approach. Through site visits across the city, participants gained first-hand insights into how an integrated approach is essential for delivering the energy transition and preparing cities for a warmer future.
