China’s MTO complex remains the single biggest swing factor in global methanol trade. Our latest long-term supply and demand balances lower this year’s global methanol demand growth forecast, with the Middle East supply squeeze now expected to persist for longer than the market had hoped. China’s import policy and pricing remain the key driver of global trade flows, given the scale of its domestic MTO/CTO demand and its still-large import requirement. Methanol capacity growth is also set to slow through 2030, concentrated mostly in China and the Middle East, supporting our view that pricing continues moving towards sustained reinvestment levels.
