Is your emergency shower or eyewash ready for winter? Prepare your emergency equipment with this helpful freeze-protection checklist: ☑️ Freeze Strategy – For exposed sites, install heated/freezer-protected fixtures or enclosures. Verify heat trace, insulation, and/or freeze-protection valves. ☑️ Tepid Water – Ensure tempering systems deliver 60–100 °F (16–38 °C) even in cold weather for the full 15-minute flush. Test mixing valves, power, and heat sources. ☑️ Piping & Cabinets – Inspect insulation, seal penetrations, and confirm cabinet heaters and gaskets are intact. ☑️ Monitoring – Add temperature sensors or alarms on exposed runs/cabinets for early alerts (best practice). ☑️ Training & Drills – Review the 15-minute flush, unit locations, and frozen-fixture response. ☑️ Seasonal/Idle Units – Drain, winterize, tag out of service, and provide alternate coverage. All-Season Reminders ☑️ Location & Access – Units must be reachable within 10 seconds (~55 ft), on the same level, with a clear, well-lit path and visible signage. ☑️ Weekly Activation – Flush plumbed units long enough to refresh supply lines. For self-contained units, do weekly visual checks and replace/refresh fluids. Do not forget to annually complete a full conformance inspection. ☑️ Documentation – Record weekly activations, temperature checks, corrective actions, and annual inspection results.
