From lab prototype to globally used technology: #thinfilm innovation is becoming more accessible. The Empa spin-off Swiss Cluster, founded in 2020 in Thun by Carlos Guerra and Kevin Lücke, develops equipment that combines atomic layer deposition (ALD) and physical vapor deposition (PVD) in a single system – enabling ultra-thin, robust coatings with tailored properties. Together with Gabriela Alejandra Sanchez and Bryan Dousse, the team has built a company that brings advanced coating technologies within reach. This opens up new possibilities across industries, from optics and watchmaking to medical implants and microelectronics. The achievement has recently been recognized with the Swiss Economic Award 2026 in the category "Industry/Production".
