From sustainable chemistry to application: PFAS-free materials are gaining ground in selected applications. Empa researcher Dorina Opris has been awarded an ERC Proof of Concept Grant to advance silicon-based materials for soft transducers toward market readiness. Designed as fluorine-free alternatives to conventional polymers, these materials respond to growing regulatory pressure on PFAS while opening new technological possibilities. In specific applications, they offer clear advantages – particularly where flexibility and performance at lower temperatures are required. Dorina Opris and her team are developing them as printable inks for scalable thin-film production, with potential uses in batteries, capacitators, robotics, and actuator systems. Over the next 18 months, the focus is on prototyping and validation, helping bridge the critical gap between laboratory research and industrial adoption. 👉️Read on: https://lnkd.in/en7b_zGe ✍️Anna Ettlin #pfas #empamaterialsscience European Research Council (ERC)
