🚀Some of the biggest challenges in next-generation space propulsion start with materials. That is one of the reasons we are part of HERMES, a new project with CSEM and PAVE Space SA. Current 3D-printed metal materials cannot survive the extreme heat and stress needed for next-generation propulsion systems. In HERMES, we are developing and testing new ultra heat-resistant superalloys designed for additive manufacturing – with the goal of staying strong even above 1,100°C. 💡Why does that matter beyond the lab? Because stronger high-temperature materials could help enable more efficient rockets, lower space mission costs, and better satellite services. Kicking off on July 22, HERMES has a total budget of more than €1 million and is largely funded by European Space Agency - ESA through ESA Phi-Lab Switzerland at the European Space Deep-Tech Innovation Centre (ESDI).
