Engineering cellular function at the subcellular level remains a major challenge in biotechnology. 𧬠Researchers at Emory University and the Georgia Institute of Technology have developed protein-based polymers that enable the formation of membraneless organelles (MLOs) within human cells. By harnessing natural phase separation, this platform creates programmable, heritable intracellular compartments ā supporting precise cell functionalization and even replacing organelles lost in disease. With high biocompatibility and minimal disruption to native processes, the technology shows strong potential for immunotherapy, cell therapy, and beyond.
