New in Elsevier’s Current Biology by Cell Press: sunbirds can drink nectar using tongue-generated suction alone, a first reported for any vertebrate. Using high-speed video across multiple sunbird species, the research team shows nectar can be drawn in with subtle tongue movements while the tongue stays in the flower, without needing mouth reshaping.
