“Forty Eight Year Old Man” is a painting by Brazilian artist Antônio Diogo da Silva Parreiras painted in 1920. Parreiras was born in 1860 in Niteroi in Rio de Janeiro. One of 9 children he studied at the Belas Artes de Rio de Janeiro but disenfranchised by his time there he left to study under the German artist Johann Georg Grimm. When Grimm left to work in the countryside he decided to educate himself. In 1886 he travelled to Venice to complete his studies for 2 years. On his return to Brazil he became professor of landscape painting at ENBA & was an exponent of plain-air painting (painting outdoor) after 2 years he set up the Escola do Ar Livre, outdoor school. In 1906 he set up a second home & studio in Paris where his spectacular nudes got him recognition. He had an irascible character, frequently got into disagreements with other artists, preferring to make his own way, described as having “fiery energy, the liveliness of expression, the impeccable sharpness of features, which are found in the masters’ masculine physiognomy, are reflected exactly in his formidable work”. He was called the perfect son of Brazil, where 3 brave races merge. In 1937 he died not far from where he was born. https://lnkd.in/ek-pnkt
