Can wind turbines help save the oyster? In France many years ago, I saw how #offshorewind developers, fishermen and grid operators collaborated to grow oysters on the substation, which functioned much as an artifical reef. Substations are the underwater structures that collect and transmit electricity from the offshore wind turbine. Now research from the Norwegian Institute of Marine Research (IMR), Norway shows how such interventions may help restore oyster populations infected by dangerous parasites such as the bonamiosis. The research illustrates the importance of including nature-positive design in offshore wind auctions, but also how maritime species and offshore wind activity can co-exist and be even mutually beneficial when done right.
