Most budget overruns in construction don't start as financial problems, they start as communication problems. We are thinking about the subcontractor who didn't know the scope changed, the PM who found out about the delay on Friday afternoon or the director who got the budget update three weeks late. By the time the numbers are off, the decisions that caused it were made weeks, sometimes months, earlier. The fix isn't a bigger contingency budget, it's just tighter information flow. What's the one communication breakdown you see most often on your projects?
