A little over a year ago, we launched the Elia Group Research Challenge. Today, we’re sharing the results of the first edition. In collaboration with Energinet and leading research institutes, our ambition was clear: To accelerate the journey from research to real-world system operations. To achieve this, we focused on defining concrete research questions and creating the right environment, combining close collaboration, technical sparring, high-quality data, and dedicated budget. Over the past year, five research teams have worked on key operational challenges (from grid monitoring to simulation and system control) with one objective in mind: delivering solutions that can be used in control rooms. Here’s what we’ve achieved: • New approaches to speed up load flow calculations, combining accuracy and performance through innovative “DC+” methods • Promising solutions to integrate impedance frequency scans into system operations, validated through simulations and with potential for real-world application. • Faster and more flexible simulation models using open standards (Modelica & FMI), reducing dependency on black-box solutions • A clearer understanding of where certain approaches are not yet viable, allowing us to focus efforts where impact is strongest Beyond technical results, this work also highlights something essential: Closer collaboration between researchers and system operations significantly accelerates innovation. And ultimately, this goes far beyond the control room. • By improving how we monitor, analyse and operate the grid, these advances help prevent congestion, anticipate risks earlier and make better use of existing infrastructure. • This means a more reliable electricity supply, better integration of renewable energy, and a system that can grow in a smarter and more cost-effective way. • In practice, it supports industry, accelerate the energy transition, and helps keep electricity accessible and affordable for society. These insights are already helping shape the next round of the Research Challenge, currently in preparation, with an even stronger focus on implementation and scalability. A big thank you to all research partners and contributors for the close collaboration throughout this first edition. #EliaGroup #StrongerTogether #Innovation #EnergyTransition #PowerSystem #Research #50Hertz
