The announcement that Subsea7 is appointing its next CEO ahead of the Saipem merger caught my attention. The board has removed one of the biggest uncertainties before the integration has even begun. It has also sent an interesting strategic signal. Stuart Fitzgeraldโ€™s career has extended beyond traditional subsea oil and gas into offshore wind and renewable energy. Whether intentional or not, his appointment suggests the combined organisation sees its future as broader than its legacy business. Leadership appointments rarely reflect operational capability alone. They often reveal where a board believes the company is heading. Governance is often associated with control, approvals and oversight. In reality, some of the best governance decisions are the ones that reduce uncertainty before it has a chance to spread through the organisation. A merger creates enough unknowns on its own. There will be questions about the operating model, leadership team, culture, customers and priorities. Leaving the identity of the future CEO unresolved would simply have added another layer of uncertainty that nobody needed. Whoever ultimately leads the combined organisation now has time to influence the integration instead of inheriting it halfway through. Relationships can be built, difficult conversations can happen early and decisions can be made before people start filling the gaps with their own assumptions. Good governance is rarely dramatic. Most of the time it looks like this: making important decisions early enough that they never become problems. I suspect this appointment will receive far less attention than the merger itself. From an integration perspective, it may turn out to be one of the most important decisions the board has made. https://lnkd.in/ez5gd-Jc
