EPDT 2025 Products of the Year Winner!!! The RA8P1 from Renesas Electronics. Congratulations to all the team at Renesas that were involved in bringing the RA8P1 AI-enabled microcontroller to market. Released back in July, this device features 1GHz Arm Cortex-M85 and 250MHz Arm Cortex-M33 processing engines, plus a 256MACs/cycle Arm Ethos-U55 neural processing unit (NPU) for attending to AI workloads. 7300 CoreMarks of processing throughput and 256GOPS of AI performance can be attained. Fabricated via use of a TSMC 22nm ultra-low leakage semiconductor process, to ensure superior power efficiency characteristics and heightened integration, it is aimed at addressing multi-modal edge-located AI applications (such as those involving voice, vision and real-time analytics). Instead of relying on flash technology, up to 1MBytes of magneto-resistive RAM (MRAM) memory have been embedded. This enables accelerated write speeds, plus long-term operational endurance and heightened data retention levels. Advanced cryptographic security IP, immutable storage and tamper protection are featured, plus Arm TrustZone data partitioning functionality. 16-bit analogue-to-digital converter (ADC) and 12-bit digital-to-analogue converter (DAC) functionality are also incorporated. I/O options include a 16-bit camera interface capable of supporting 5Mpixel cameras, a MIPI CSI-2 with dual lanes that both support 720Mbits/s data rates, alongside 1Gbit Ethernet, USB2.0 HS/FS, CAN-FD, SPI, I3C and I2C serial ports.
