When an HOA election has no competition, do you still need a vote? ❔ In some cases, the answer is ‘no,’ thanks to a vote by acclamation for an HOA. When the number of qualified candidates matches (or is fewer than) the available board seats, an HOA may skip traditional balloting and elect candidates automatically. This is known as election by acclamation. But while it may sound simple, there are still important rules to follow. Here’s what HOAs need to know: 🔸 Why acclamation is used: It reduces administrative burden, saves time, and avoids unnecessary elections when outcomes are already determined 🔸 When it applies: Only in uncontested elections where candidates equal available board positions 🔸 HOA election notice requirements still matter: Boards must still follow proper nomination timelines, notify members in advance, and confirm eligibility before declaring results 🔸 Why process still matters: Even without a ballot, transparency ensures trust, compliance, and fairness across the community The key takeaway: acclamation streamlines accountability. Understanding the purpose of acclamations helps HOAs balance efficiency with proper governance, ensuring members still feel informed and represented even when a formal vote isn’t required.
