From 3 Years to 4 Months: A Successful GIS Data Collection Transformation ⚡📍 How we redesigned a field process to capture the spatial data of 1.36 million electricity customers at scale In 2021, at Khorasan Razavi Electric Distribution Company, we faced a significant backlog in registering customer location data. At first glance, the traditional approach suggested a long and costly effort — at least 3 years and a substantial budget. But instead of treating it as a separate mapping project, we chose to redesign the process itself. By integrating Mobile GIS into our existing Android-based meter reading workflow, we successfully completed this large-scale project in just 4 months. 📌 What made the difference? Rather than deploying separate survey teams, we embedded spatial data collection into the routine meter reading process: - Added an online/offline map module to the Android meter reading application - Made parcel-based coordinate registration mandatory for final data submission - Used satellite imagery and mobile GPS as practical tools to improve accuracy and data quality 📊 Key outcomes ✅ 93% of the target achieved  ✅ Spatial data collected for around 1.36 million active customers  ✅ 88% reduction in execution time  ✅ 78% reduction in final collection costs 💡 A key lesson from this experience The real success was not only in the technology. It came from a shift in mindset: from a standalone map-based project to an operational, location-based workflow. This transformation showed how effective coordination between Customer Services, IT, and GIS can solve major operational challenges at scale. It also laid the groundwork for applying GIS more effectively in other field operations such as installation, supervision, and inspection. 👥 Field adoption was another critical factor More than 200 meter readers across the province took part in this project. Although most had limited GIS knowledge, strong organizational support and user-friendly tools made it possible to achieve a very good level of quality and accuracy. 📄 Looking for the full technical breakdown?
