Completed some time ago This project is still highly relevant to share today, the MindStep™ staircase at Greenpower’s Fontwell headquarters in West Sussex occupies a low-energy education and engineering centre devoted to electric mobility. In this timber-framed building, the staircase becomes both a route and an argument for sustainable making, expressed almost entirely through wood. EeStairs developed the flight as a sequence of CNC-machined laminated bamboo ribs, treads and extended risers, creating the finely striated, wave-like soffit visible beneath the stair. The principal challenge was geometric precision: each timber blade had to align exactly, so the underside would read as one continuous architectural surface. Digital modelling, CNC cutting and concealed mechanical fixings achieved this without heavy visual reinforcement. The craftsmanship lies in the disciplined repetition of natural material. Laminated bamboo was chosen for strength, stability and its environmental intelligence; stainless steel was used for the handrail and slender connecting details, giving durable precision where structure and touch meet. The result remains quietly radical: a timber stair with the accuracy of engineering and the warmth of hand-finished craft.
