Early this month, the EDF power solutions Australia team joined industry leaders in Canberra for the International Hydropower Association (IHA) Hydropower Day. As we accelerate toward a high-renewables grid, the consensus was clear: Pumped Hydro Energy Storage (PHES) is the cornerstone of a secure, self-reliant energy future. We enjoyed discussing how EDF’s global storage expertise can support Australia’s specific needs for long-duration energy storage and grid stability. PHES is more than just storage, it is a "new shape" for the Australian grid. It provides the long-duration backbone necessary for true energy sovereignty and national security. A key highlight was the launch of "An Energy Secure Australia," a policy roadmap detailing how we can scale storage to the 55 GW required by 2050. Key Takeaways: - Firming is Priority: PHES offers the high-capacity, long-duration storage needed to insulate the Australian grid from global shocks and ensure 24/7 reliability. With lifetimes spanning 50-100 years, PHES represents a generational investment in the circularity and permanence of our energy system.   - Collaboration is Key: Building the future grid requires strong commitment and deep partnerships between federal government, States and energy players. These projects act as economic anchors for regional Australia, providing decades of stable jobs and infrastructure investment.   A big thank you to the IHA for hosting such a vital forum. We’re looking forward to turning these discussions into long-term energy solutions. #HydropowerDay #RenewableEnergy #EDF #PumpedHydro #EnergyTransition #Canberra James Katsikas - Brieg Pennanec'h
