FROM COMPONENTS TO ORCHESTRATION // At Xplore-to-Innovate 2026, Jonas Grötzinger from the EDAG Group together with Leonárd Lapis from thyssenkrupp Automotive explored the role of Vehicle Motion Control in future vehicle architectures. Three messages stood out: First, the chassis is becoming software-defined. As by-wire technologies and new actuators increase the number of degrees of freedom, mechanical components alone are no longer sufficient. The differentiating factor is shifting towards software and functional integration. Second, Vehicle Motion Control is emerging as a key technology. Safety, comfort and vehicle dynamics will increasingly depend on the intelligent orchestration of steering, braking, propulsion and suspension systems. Third, complexity makes collaboration essential. Future vehicle architectures require close cooperation between engineering partners and technology providers. A fourth aspect reaches beyond chassis development itself. The competitive advantage of future vehicles may come less from individual components and more from the way they are orchestrated. By-wire technologies are shifting value creation from mechanics to intelligence. The next competitive advantage will not come from individual components, but from the intelligence that connects them.
