🏙️ Regeneration does not run on electoral timescales Writing for The Municipal Journal our Chair Sir Michael Lyons reflects on why long-term regeneration cannot afford to pause while councils reset after local elections. Political change is a vital part of local democracy. But major regeneration programmes take years, often decades, to assemble, fund and deliver. As councils form cabinets, agree leadership arrangements and set priorities for the year ahead, maintaining momentum matters. Sir Michael explores three lessons from his experience as a former local authority chief executive and Chair of ECF: • newly elected members should be engaged early and seriously • momentum matters, especially in a challenging delivery environment • long-term partnerships can provide continuity through political and economic change Through ECF, the partnership between Homes England, Legal & General and Muse, we have seen how long-term commitment, shared purpose and partnership can help complex regeneration programmes endure beyond individual leadership changes.
