The world came together at Chornobyl to remember the sacrifices of 40 years ago - and to reaffirm what must be protected today. EBRD President Odile Renaud-Basso joined Presidents Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Maia Sandu and European Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis alongside others in addressing the international community at the site the EBRD has worked for decades to make safe. “Chornobyl reminds us not only of the consequences of catastrophe, but also of what is possible when the international community acts with unity, determination and long-term purpose,” President Renaud-Basso said. After Russia’s drone attack last year, restoring the shield which covers the remains of the Soviet-era reactor by 2030 will cost at least €500 million. Additional pledges in 2026 will be critical for moving from emergency measures to thorough repairs. The power of international cooperation remains essential to protect Chornobyl, support Ukraine and guarantee nuclear safety for all. The EBRD’s work in Chornobyl is currently supported by the European Commission, the French Ministry of Economy and Finance, Ministère des Affaires étrangères français, the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Direktoratet for strålevern og atomsikkerhet (DSA), Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, Global Affairs Canada | Affaires mondiales Canada, Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection, the TaiwanBusiness-EBRD Technical Cooperation Fund, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Belgium and Ministero dell'economia e delle finanze.
