Diarrhoeal diseases claim nearly half a million lives globally each year, often caused by contaminated drinking water. 💧🌎 By adopting the Sustainable Development Goals, all United Nations members agreed to the development target of making safe drinking water available to everyone. A study by #Eawag demonstrates that access to water alone is not sufficient to reduce diarrheal disease in children. 👉 Full publication available here: https://lnkd.in/eMP8ZBjw From a health perspective, it is essential not only to provide access to a supply of drinking water, but also to ensure that it meets the criteria for “Safely Managed Drinking Water” (SMDW). According to the United Nations, water is considered safely managed when it’s ✅ free from faecal contamination ✅ easily accessible at home ✅ sufficiently available ✅ from a safe source Many countries do not yet meet the criteria for the SDG-defined quality standards for a safely managed source of drinking water.
