Great innovations often begin by asking a simple question: What if we could do better? Pamela AFOKPE, a plant breeder and product development specialist at East-West Seed in West Africa, challenged long-held assumptions about indigenous vegetables and helped transform them into crops that create greater opportunities for smallholder farmers across the region. Through years of research, collaboration with farmers, and practical innovation, her work has improved crop resilience, strengthened local food systems, and expanded market opportunities. We are proud to celebrate Pamela on receiving the Borlaug Field Award from the World Food Prize Foundation, recognizing her outstanding contributions to agricultural innovation and farmer livelihoods. This recognition also carries special meaning for East-West Seed, following the legacy of our founder, Simon Groot, who was named the 2019 World Food Prize Laureate for his pioneering work in making quality vegetable seeds more accessible to smallholder farmers. Congratulations, Pamela, on this well-deserved achievement!
