In appreciation of Black History Month - With only an elementary education (6th Grade) Garrett Augustus Morgan began his career as a sewing machine mechanic. He went on to patent several inventions including an improved sewing machine and traffic signal, a hair straightening product and the very first evolution of a "Safety Hood and Smoke Protector" in 1912 for fireman and his prototype later evolved to include its own air supply that we know today as a "Gas Mask" that assisted those in WWI in 1914. He also rescued workers (using one of his inventions) trapped in a water intake tunnel 50ft below Lake Erie saving nine lives.
