One drag night can open a door that you didn’t even know was there. 🚪 In some cases that door leads to a decade of trying things on; names, pronouns, haircuts, clothes so you can finally see yourself clearly in the mirror. And in some cases, it can even lead to a life of helping others do the same. In our latest Zero Distance essay, we sit down with Raelee Sweet (they/them) to explore how one night of drag became the catalyst for a decade of gender expansion. From asking bunkmates to use they/them pronouns to the “big chop” and a shaggy cut that felt like home, Raelee’s journey reminds us that expression isn’t a straight line, it’s a constellation.  For Raelee, identity has never been about choosing between glitter and a masculine silhouette. It’s about collecting what fits: men’s clothes and voice lessons, blue lipstick and long hair and letting these combinations be the truth. Over time, femininity shifted from feeling like a rental with blank walls to a beloved home decorated exactly as they please. Community helped shaped that belonging. At camp, nametags that welcomed name and pronoun changes created a practice of seeing one another, really seeing. Later at It Gets Better, a Youth Voices ambassador named Alejandro modeled something radical: a transmasculine identity without cutting long hair. That mirror moment mattered. It said you don’t have to trade one piece of yourself to claim another. You don’t have to pick just one version. At e.l.f. Beauty, we believe self-expression belongs to everyone, every day, in every direction. Our community of e.l.f.z, including partners, creators and changemakers, keeps showing us that beauty is a practice of freedom, not a box to check. Raelee’s story underscores that truth. Pronouns can stay steady while hair grows long. Glitter can sit proudly beside swagger. Identity can be bold, soft, or both at once. Ten years after that first drag outfit, Raelee isn’t done exploring, because gender isn’t a destination. It’s an art form. From masc to femme and everywhere in between, there’s room to evolve, remix and sparkle. And yes, there will be glitter. Always. ✨ Read Raelee’s full story here: https://lnkd.in/eHN_FcVZ
