What defines a great winery once it no longer has anything left to prove? That question stayed with us long after attending the Dutch launch of the 2023 vintage of ORNELLAIA, organised by Vinites at the two Michelin-starred Restaurant de Bokkedoorns** Several weeks later, we had the opportunity to sit down with Marco Balsimelli, Technical Director of Ornellaia and Masseto. Rather than discussing scores or individual vintages, our conversation centred on something far more fundamental: how a benchmark estate continues to evolve after more than forty years at the pinnacle of Italian fine wine. One remark in particular stood out: "Every vintage teaches you something." It perfectly encapsulates the philosophy that now defines Ornellaia. Rather than pursuing stylistic change, the estate continues to deepen its understanding of place—allowing each vineyard parcel and each growing season to contribute another layer to its story. That idea ultimately became the foundation of our latest long-form winery profile.
