Lord Provost of Dundee Bill Campbell is welcoming the significant economic boost that an international science conference will bring to the city next week. It is estimated that the 37th European Cetacean Society (ECS) Conference will generate more than £1.6 million in direct economic benefit for Dundee and the wider region as over 750 marine science experts travel to Dundee for the five-day event. LIVEHOUSE will host the main conference programme, with workshops taking place at venues across the city centre, allowing delegates to engage with and experience the city throughout the event. The conference will also open with an Ice-Breaker reception at V&A Dundee. The ECS Conference is Europe’s best-known annual gathering for scientists, students, conservation practitioners and policy specialists working on marine mammals, including whales, dolphins, porpoises and seals. The 2026 Dundee meeting, taking place from 20-24 April will be held under the theme “Basics to Benefits. The event will celebrate the full journey of marine mammal science - from the foundational research that uncovers knowledge to the applied studies that turn this understanding into action for conservation and management.
