In late May, the Natural Resources team received a report about an adult osprey entangled in rope on a distribution pole near Lake James, N.C. Responding promptly, the team coordinated with the Marion Ops Center to rescue the trapped mother and ensure the safety of any chicks in the nest. “It's not every day you get up close and personal with such a powerful bird of prey," said Joshua Buckner, senior journeyman lineworker with Duke Energy. "I'm grateful for the opportunity to assist in the successful rescue of an osprey. Helping remove the entanglement and see the bird return to its nest and baby was a rewarding reminder of the value of conservation and teamwork.” Thanks to their swift action, the mother osprey was freed, and additional rope that could pose future risks was carefully removed from the site.
