The National Redress Scheme is for people who have experienced institutional child sexual abuse. Redress is about recognising the harm done and acknowledging that the institution was responsible. If applicants are offered redress through the National Redress Scheme, they can also receive an apology from the institution that harmed them. This is called a Direct Personal Response. Survivors can choose to receive their apology in person, in a letter, or both. An apology can be an important step in the healing journey. It can help to know what is being done to prevent trauma for future generations. A Redress Support Service can help recipients decide what kind of apology they want. Some Redress Support Services also provide specialised support for First Nations survivors.
