When seconds matter, so does specialist care. Last month, an 89-year-old woman arrived at JBS GERONTOLOGY CENTRE in the middle of the night. Before reaching us, she had already been seen by another physician and given aspirin — a well-intentioned decision, but one that carried serious risk. She was having a hemorrhagic stroke, not an ischemic one. In that context, aspirin is contraindicated and can worsen outcomes significantly. Once she presented to our hospital, our specialist geriatrics team responded immediately. The correct diagnosis was made. The right specialists were mobilised. A holistic specialist management plan was implemented. She recovered. This case is a powerful reminder of something I am deeply passionate about: Early, accurate, specialist inpatient geriatrics care changes outcomes. It is the difference between survival and loss. Between a manageable recovery and a financial burden that devastates families for years. At JBS GERONTOLOGY CENTRE, we do not only see older patients in clinic. We admit acutely unwell patients. We manage complex, high-risk presentations. We have the specialist teams to do it well. This is what Nigeria’s elderly deserve — and what we are here to provide. JBS Gerontology Centre is Nigeria’s first and foremost private Geriatrics Hospital and Specialist Centre for the Older Age Group.
