During a recent training for farmer coordinators in the Shimukuni area of Chibombo, organized by the Conservation Farming Unit (CFU), a significant disconnect was identified between the Unit and agro-dealers regarding the availability of essential tools and equipment for conservation agriculture. Wipa Macha, a farmer coordinator from kalola, highlighted the pressing challenges faced by farmers due to the inadequate supply of necessary tools from agro-dealers. This gap is hindering their ability to fully implement effective conservation practices. Dr. Oliver Kandela Bulaya, Project Coordinator at CFU, emphasized the vital role of equipment suppliers and agro-dealers in mitigating the impacts of climate change. He stressed the importance of ensuring that vital tools—such as rippers, tines, and chaka holes—are readily available. Dr. Bulaya assured that CFU, through its network of farmer coordinators, will work diligently to create demand for agro-dealers and facilitate engagement with communities and agro dealers to address the shortage of tools and equipment. Additionally, he encouraged farmers to take advantage of early land preparation by utilizing tractor services available at mechanization centers, such as those offered by Keembe Farm Institute, to effectively prepare their fields.
