Building Solutions for the Social Economy
The truest eulogy for a scholar is not written. It is taught. A few days ago, like so many of you, I grieved the passing of Dr Muhammad Umer Chapra (raḥimahu Llāh), and I shared that grief here in an earlier post. But grief is the smallest tribute we can offer a man of his stature. So this post is not about mourning — it is about continuation. The Prophet ﷺ told us which deeds outlive us: «إِذَا مَاتَ الْإِنْسَانُ انْقَطَعَ عَنْهُ عَمَلُهُ إِلَّا مِنْ ثَلَاثَةٍ: إِلَّا مِنْ صَدَقَةٍ جَارِيَةٍ، أَوْ عِلْمٍ يُنْتَفَعُ بِهِ، أَوْ وَلَدٍ صَالِحٍ يَدْعُو لَهُ» "When a person dies, his deeds come to an end except for three: an ongoing charity (ṣadaqah jāriyah), beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for him." — Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim Dr Chapra left behind beneficial knowledge in abundance. The best way I know to honour him is to help that knowledge keep flowing — a continuing ṣadaqah jāriyah, to his account and to ours. So today, Islamic.University is honoured to announce a new course built entirely around his life's work: "Economic Thought of Muhammad Umer Chapra" Across fourteen modules, it carries his thought forward at three levels: 🔹 Basic — his life and intellectual journey, and the foundations of Islamic economics: the worldview of Tawḥīd, Khilāfah and accountability. 🔹 Intermediate — his core frameworks in action: Maqāṣid al-Sharī'ah as the compass of economic policy, his critique of capitalism and socialism, a just monetary system and the case against ribā, Islamic banking, zakat and public finance. 🔹 Advanced — evaluating and extending his legacy: financial stability and global financial reform, development with justice, his reading of Ibn Khaldūn on the rise and decline of civilisations, and institutional renewal in the light of the Maqāṣid. Register at https://lnkd.in/dcjsDqZH The photographs relate to the year 2009, when I had the honour of accompanying Dr Chapra and Dr Bambang Brodjonegoro (the then-Director-General of the Islamic Development Bank Institute (IsDBI) to an International Workshop on Islamic Finance at Universitas Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. I could never have imagined then that I would one day build a course to carry his ideas forward. May Allah ﷻ have mercy on him, and make this a ṣadaqah jāriyah that never stops flowing to him. Āmīn. ____________________________________ Dr. Azmi Omar Sami Al-Suwailem Mahmoud Sami Nabi Mansor Ibrahim Dr. Muhammad Syahmi Mohd Karim, Ph.D, CA (M), ACMA, CGMA Amir Shaharuddin Dr Sayd Farook Ahmet Faruk Aysan Mehmet Asutay Burhan ULUYOL (Uyghur) Abdul Qadir Abdul Rahman Buhari Professor Dato' Dr Ansary Ahmed Dato’ Abu Ubaidah Kemin' Faraz Adam Dr (Mufti) Yousuf Sultan Umar Munshi Harris Irfan Safdar Alam Ibrahim Khan Dr Tanvir Uddin #UmerChapra #IslamicEconomics #IslamicFinance #SadaqahJariah #Maqasid #IslamicUniversity #Netversity
