As the first surgeon in the world to successfully implant an automatic heart defibrillator in a human patient, Watkins stands among the giants of modern medicine—an innovator whose hands saved lives and whose voice opened doors long shut to Black physicians. His life is a powerful testament to excellence forged through courage, discipline, and an unyielding commitment to justice.   In 1966, Watkins made history as the first African American student admitted to Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, breaking a barrier that had stood for nearly a century. His admission was not merely symbolic—it marked the beginning of a transformational shift in southern medical education.   Watkins continued his training at Johns Hopkins University, specializing in cardiac surgery at one of the most prestigious medical institutions in the world. In 1980, alongside Dr. Michel Mirowski, he performed the first successful implantation of an automatic implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (AICD)—a revolutionary device designed to detect and correct life-threatening heart rhythms. This single procedure changed global cardiac care, providing a new, life-saving option for patients at risk of sudden cardiac death.
