African American Engineer • Inventor • Master Draftsman • Illuminator of the Modern Age Lewis Latimer (1848–1928) Lewis Howard Latimer was one of the most brilliant and influential inventors of the 19th and early 20th centuries—an engineer whose work helped usher in the age of electric light. Born in Chelsea, Massachusetts, to parents who had escaped enslavement, Latimer rose from humble beginnings to become a key figure in the development of modern electrical engineering. His extraordinary skills in drafting, design, and mechanical innovation placed him among the most important technical minds of his era. Latimer’s genius first gained national recognition when he worked for a patent law firm and became an expert draftsman—so skilled that his drawings were used in several major inventions of the time. In 1876, he was hired to draft the patent diagrams for Alexander Graham Bell’s telephone, completing the work in record time and helping Bell file his patent just hours before a competitor. But Latimer’s greatest contributions came through his groundbreaking work in electric lighting. In the 1880s, he patented an improved method for producing carbon filaments, the key component inside early incandescent bulbs. His innovation dramatically increased bulb longevity, made electric lighting more affordable, and allowed it to be safely installed in homes and businesses around the world. This achievement placed him alongside the foremost pioneers of the electrical industry.
