The power of youth leadership is extraordinary. When we empower young people to speak up, they don't just change their own thinking—they influence their friends, their schools, and their communities. Abbygail Patterson is a wonderful example of what happens when passionate rangatahi are given the opportunity to lead. What started as a conversation with a teacher has grown into a community-wide road safety documentary, media coverage, and another platform to encourage young people to make safer choices on our roads. Her story reminds us that creating a positive road safety culture isn't just about education—it's about empowering young people to become the voices their peers listen to. At Kaitiaki o Ara/SADD, we believe that peer influence is one of the most powerful tools we have. Every campaign, conversation, presentation and project led by our students helps make road safety relevant, relatable and part of everyday youth culture. Abby's message says it perfectly: "Don't be shy about it—just make noise!" We're incredibly proud of Abby and all our SADD student leaders across Aotearoa who continue to step forward, use their voices, and inspire others to help prevent loss on our roads. Together, they're building a future where safer choices become the norm, and every young person has the opportunity to thrive.
