"Building Future Ready Professionals." That was the theme of the Chartered Governance and Accountancy Institute in Zimbabwe Winter School 2026 — and last week, at Tamarind Resort in Nyanga, I had the honour of speaking to that very idea. My topic: what AI and automation truly mean for the accountant and the company secretary. My message: this is reinvention, not replacement. The work AI is absorbing — manual data entry, reconciliations by hand, IAS 29 restatements, board packs assembled page by page — was never the heart of our profession. What remains, and what grows, is judgement, ethics, advice, and oversight. A few convictions I shared with the room: → AI is already mainstream in finance. The question is no longer whether we adopt it, but how well we govern it. → Our role is rising — from scorekeeper to strategic advisor, from explaining the past to shaping the decision. → The risks are real: hallucinations, bias, accountability gaps. None is a reason to refuse the technology. Every one is a reason to govern it — with frameworks like ISO 42001, the EU AI Act, and the NIST AI RMF now joining IFRS and King in our governance vocabulary. → Start small, think big, move now. You don't need a transformation budget. You need one process and one week. The professional who learns to direct the machine will be far more valuable than the one it quietly replaces. The future of our profession in Zimbabwe will not be written by the technology — it will be written by how we choose to use it. A future-ready professional is more human, not less: more judgement, more ethics, more wisdom. That is a future worth building. Thank you to Dr Gomera, President Kanjanda, and the entire CGI Zimbabwe team for the kind invitation — and to an exceptional audience whose questions made the session truly come alive. Better Governance. Better Future. #AI #Governance #Finance #Accounting #Zimbabwe #DigitalTransformation #CorporateGovernance #FutureReady
