Defining a disease as "rare" involves more than just numbers; it means recognizing the unique challenges that patients and clinicians face in achieving a correct diagnosis. That's why, as Rare Disease Day approaches, we want to shift our focus to those diseases that often remain “invisible” and unheard of. Among these there is 𝗻𝗲𝘂𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗵𝗶𝗰 𝗸𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘀 (𝗡𝗞): a rare, degenerative eye disease that challenges the very way we perceive disease. Understanding why this rare condition develops is crucial for early intervention. In NK, when corneal nerves are compromised, the eye loses its vital "alarm system"— pain. This "dangerous silence" means that damage from viral infections, surgery, or systemic diseases like diabetes can progress unnoticed, moving from simple sensory loss to severe corneal complications. With a prevalence of fewer than 5 in 10,000 people in the EU, this condition requires specialized awareness and precise tools, such as esthesiometry, to detect what the patient can no longer feel. Early intervention is the only way to break the cycle of degeneration and protect long-term vision. At Dompé, we are committed to advancing the frontier of rare disease research, leveraging our expertise in neurotrophic mechanisms to address the unmet needs of patients worldwide. Scroll through the carousel for a deeper look at why Neurotrophic Keratitis is considered a rare disease and how the absence of pain plays a central role in its progression.
