Focus on coastal safety: DMT develops storm surge and flood models for the District of/Landkreis Cuxhaven   To identify particularly vulnerable dike sections and potential flood areas resulting from dike breaches, DMT has modeled storm surge scenarios for the District of/Landkreis Cuxhaven. Using a hydrodynamic and a wave model, potentially vulnerable dike sections were identified for two storm surge scenarios. A flood model provided simulations for a total of 30 dike breach locations.   The results were linked to spatial data in a geographic information system (GIS) and evaluated to create maps of the flooded areas. Based on the results, Landkreis Cuxhaven will create a vulnerability mapping service that visualizes risks from extreme weather events and will be developed as part of the district’s climate change adaptation strategy. The result is a robust foundation for planning and operational preparedness.   Project Manager Lena Wedlich-Gottschalk: “During the dike inspections in the spring, particularly critical locations relevant to the study were identified. The intensive dialogue with the various stakeholders has further underscored the urgency with which the district is approaching this task.”   In addition, DMT has developed a plugin for the QGIS geoinformation system to facilitate further use of the model results, for example for time-series and cross-section visualizations. An address search can now also be used to determine which combinations of dike breach locations and storm surge scenarios would result in flooding of the location in question.   Are you responsible for assessing storm surge risks and developing flood scenarios in your city or county? DMT supports you in preparing for risk scenarios and identifying necessary actions.
