As part of our weekly #TechTuesdays newsletter, this week we shine a spotlight on the vibrant and dynamic tech ecosystem of Eindhoven. This city has rapidly established itself as a powerhouse of innovation, largely fueled by foundational companies like ASML and NXP Semiconductors. With their support, along with two venture builders, Eindhoven has transformed into a melting pot for tech enthusiasts and entrepreneurs alike. Yet, amid this thriving landscape, we identified a crucial need for better connections. Too often, individuals are left scratching their heads when we mention key players in our ecosystem. This lack of familiarity can be a significant barrier for new founders, funders, and educators who aspire to make their mark. Thus, we've compiled a definitive guide to who’s who in the Eindhoven tech ecosystem, so you can be informed with everything happening in the Eindhoven tech space. We begin with Guus Frericks, a true legend in the startup scene. As the youngest VP in Philips history, he transformed Startup Bootcamp into HighTechXL the original hardware accelerator. His journey didn’t stop there; he grew it into a deep-tech venture builder and is now a venture capitalist with a €110 million fund at DeepTechXL. Equally influential is Pim Tuyls, the founder of Intrinsic ID, who successfully expanded to the U.S. and just made headlines with the sale of his company to Synopsys Inc. On the academic front, Carmen van Vilsteren stands out not only as a professor at Eindhoven University of Technology but also as a champion for female entrepreneurs through her investments in women-led companies. Among notable funders is Monika Hoekstra from NXTGEN Hightech, overseeing a National Growth Fund program nearing €1 billion in investments. Together with Andy Lurling and Sven Bakkes, co-founders of LUMO Labs, they have funded promising startups like Autoscriber, which recently partnered with Microsoft. The founders of inPhocal, Martijn Boerkamp and Robert van Tankeren, have successfully navigated challenges during the pandemic to position their company for expansion. Similarly, Fabrizio Del Maffeo of Axelera AI has raised over €63 million to lead one of Europe’s hottest startups focused on AI hardware and software. This is just a glimpse into the remarkable individuals shaping Eindhoven's tech landscape.
