The underpinning science behind our glycocalyx sensing technology has been published in Nature Comms! Massive congratulations to our co-founders Dr Matthew Butler and Prof Simon Satchell, and the rest of the incredible Bristol Renal research team at University of Bristol. 🔬 The work shows that biochemical changes to the endothelial glycocalyx – the layer of sugars that coats the inner surface of our blood vessels – are mirrored on red blood cells. As red blood cells circulate through the body, they continuously exchange components with the glycocalyx on microscopic blood vessels in our tissues, acquiring a biochemical fingerprint of micro-vessel health in the process. 🩸 These glycocalyx changes present very early on during disease, and are directly linked to microvascular function in our organs, including the kidneys, heart and brain. Therefore, detecting them from a simple blood test opens the door for routine microvascular monitoring, enabling earlier patient diagnosis, more effective stratification, and new microvascular targeted treatments. 🚀 Microvascular disease is the hidden driving force behind many of the world’s biggest healthcare challenges like heart disease, kidney disease, and dementia, and so this work has huge potential to positively impact patients across the clinic.
