Earlier this year, I shared a personal story about a near-death experience from ten years ago. That moment changed everything for me and gave me a sense of purpose that shapes the work I do through Sharebite everyday. As I look back on 2024, a year filled with deep reflection and gratitude, I’m reminded of how close I came to not being here at all. I didn’t think I’d survive 10 minutes — the fact that I’m here today, 10 years later, has made this year especially introspective. In July 2014, I was crossing Second Avenue in Manhattan when I was hit by a car (87-year old driver). My head went through the windshield, and I went flying off the car. Unaware of how bad my injuries were, I tried to get up — but then I heard a calm, reassuring voice: “Young man, stop. Don’t get up… I’m a nurse.” That voice belonged to Karen Dunn Lopez, PhD, MPH, RN, a nursing professor who just happened to be in NYC visiting family. She was waiting for a cab to the airport when she saw the entire incident unfold. Without missing a beat, she rushed to my side, made sure I didn’t move, called my wife, and stayed with me until paramedics arrived. Stepping in to help may have seemed like a small thing to her at the time, but it ended up saving my life and setting me on a new path. People like Karen are everyday heroes — those whose simple gestures can brighten someone’s day, and whose purposeful actions & acts of kindness can transform a life. Karen’s kindness that day has stayed with me and continues to inspire me everyday. Her intervention was a turning point for me, and the work I do through Sharebite is a tribute to heroes like her. This holiday season, I’m filled with gratitude for Karen and for all the unsung heroes in our lives.
