A surgeon in London just successfully performed a remote robotic surgery, removing prostate cancer from a patient in Gibraltar… 1,500 miles away. Professor Prokar Dasgupta sat at a console in London while a robotic system operated on a patient inside a hospital in Gibraltar. The surgery used a four-armed Toumai robotic system with a 3D camera, connected through high-speed fiber lines with backup 5G, with only around 60 milliseconds of delay. Local surgeons were also on site in Gibraltar in case they needed to step in. This could change how specialized care reaches people in remote places, how hospitals share elite surgical expertise across borders, and how emergency or complex procedures get handled without forcing patients to travel halfway across the world. Right now, humans are still in control. But step by step, we are training these systems, and it is not hard to imagine a future where the robot can handle more of the work on its own.
