On a flight home from meetings with economists in Argentina, I found the song “Under Pressure” ruminating in my head. The meetings were easily the most intense of my 25 years in the group, which spans economists from around the world. The challenges the global economy faces in response to the war in Iran echo those of the pandemic: supply chains disruptions, rising costs, elevated uncertainty and a loss of trust. But the buffers that once blunted earlier shocks are gone. Fiscal and monetary stimulus has largely been spent, while inflation persists, debt burdens grow and financial risks mount. I came home thinking about how fragile the global economy has become – and how much the friendships and shared purpose built across borders matter when pressure makes turning inward feel easier. Here are the key themes that emerged from those deliberations. #economy
