Sewerage networks are critical infrastructure for conveying used water to water reclamation plants. Sewer modelling can effectively support planning and operational decisions, however, proper calibration of sewer models is essential to ensure that simulation results reflect real world sewer network performance as closely as possible. At the Singapore International Water Week (SIWW), DHI’s Peiqi Yeo 杨佩琦 will present a joint study with PUB, Singapore’s National Water Agency, on improving sewer hydraulic model calibration for dense urban environments like Singapore. This study introduces a calibration framework tailored for Singapore’s separate sewerage systems (where wastewater and stormwater operate as fully separate systems), supported by an automation tool to optimise the calibration workflow: ➡️ Systematic preprocessing of site data ➡️ Calibration criteria aligned with international guidelines ➡️ An automated tool for parameter adjustment during calibration Model performance was evaluated across multiple network locations, from upstream to downstream sewers, and across diverse land-use types under both dry and wet weather conditions. The results demonstrate that the calibrated models are able to closely reproduce measured sewer hydraulic behaviour. Given Singapore’s highly diverse land use within a compact area, a systematic calibration approach is essential to standardise observation data processing and event selection for calibration under local weather conditions. ‘The automated calibration tool helps streamline the workflow and can be readily applied to other catchments to ensure consistency’, explains project manager Veradej Phipatanasuphorn. ‘The calibrated models give our client the confidence to explore additional use cases, such as integrating the model with permanent sensors in the future. This enables more accurate monitoring and prediction of flow conditions, supporting smarter sewer network management and operations.’ 📍 𝗝𝗼𝗶𝗻 𝘂𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝗦𝗜𝗪𝗪: 𝗦𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗼 & 𝗘𝘅𝗵𝗶𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲 If you’ll be attending, drop by DHI’s booth at 𝗟𝟭-𝗔𝟭𝟵, 𝗛𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗔 or catch the poster presentation on 17 June to learn more about our approach! #SIWW2026 #WaterEngineering #HydraulicModelling #WastewaterManagement
