A writer & producer for The National Lampoon & currently the Executive Producer and Interviewer on “Saving Ferris Butler” a documentary about former SNL writer claiming to be the basis of cult character Ferris Bueller.
The Fact that the Saturday Night Live Documentary “Lorne” comes out only a few weeks before my Saturday Night Live Documentary, “Saving Ferris Butler”, which I Executive Produced and Host, feels like Kismet. Saving Ferris Butler" is a compelling documentary that explores the life and career of Ferris Butler, a former writer for "Saturday Night Live" during its notorious 1980-1981 season. This era is remembered for its challenges, yet Butler left a significant mark with his daring and provocative sketches. Notably, his sketch "Leather Weather," featuring a leather-clad Denny Dillon whipping Charlie Rocket while he is strapped to a map, pushed the envelope for sexualization in comedy and became a cultural touchstone of its time. Before SNL, Butler created "Waste Meat News," the first cable access comedy show in New York City in the mid-1970s, showcasing his innovative approach to humor. His impressive career trajectory also includes marrying songwriting legend Beverly Ross, known for iconic hits like "Lollipop" and collaborations with Elvis Presley, and being honored by both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame. The documentary features Butler's claims that his persona inspired the character Ferris Bueller in the beloved 1986 film, highlighting his connections with comedy legends Del Close and John Hughes. Through interviews with Emmy Award winning writers and cast members like Hugh Fink (2001), Jeff Richards (2001), Patrick Weathers (1980-81) Music from Neil Levy (SNL 1975-1982) archival footage including moments with legends Beverly Ross, Micheal O'Donoghue and Garrett Morris, and insightful commentary from a few podcasters who have interviewed Ferris Butler over the years. "Saving Ferris Butler" delves into the complexities of Butler's legacy, reflecting on his impact on comedy and the entertainment industry.
