China’s hospitality landscape is evolving rapidly, but one question sat at the center of our recent community gathering in Shanghai: what makes a hotel endure? In a thought-provoking discussion at the de Gournay Showroom, Design Hotels Managing Director Stijn Oyen joined leading designers Ke Xie (Signyan Design), Zhao Yu (YU Studio), Ziyu Zhuang (Büro Ziyu Zhuang | BUZZ Architects), and journalist Lu Lv to explore what transforms hotels from places people pass through into places they remember—whether through design that deepens with age, stronger ties to local communities, or experiences that leave a lasting emotional imprint. As we continue to grow our presence across China, these conversations feel particularly timely. Across our community, one idea surfaced again and again: the most meaningful hospitality experiences are not defined by novelty, but by their ability to foster a genuine sense of belonging. Thank you to everyone who joined us and contributed to such a thoughtful exchange of ideas.
