Earlier this year, Fyra partnered with Aikatalo to renew the spatial concept of the historic Helsinki shopping building, aiming to turn its inner courtyard into a welcoming and lively urban oasis for everyone to enjoy. The original 1960s architecture, with its authentic materials and distinctive character guided the design work. The renewed spatial concept unifies and refines the building’s functionality, creating intuitive connections between entrances and bringing new life to the courtyard. A strong visual identity and cohesive spatial concept together form the basis for an inviting meeting place. Thoughtful design choices, backed by data, enable meaningful reductions in environmental impact without compromising architectural integrity. The concept design of Aikatalo was guided by Life Cycle Assessment, a method that evaluates the environmental impact of each element throughout its entire lifespan. Considering the full lifecycle allows to balance function, aesthetics, and sustainability. In the case of Aikatalo, ceiling surfaces stand out with the highest emissions, yet their longevity and recyclability make them a lasting investment. Furniture, by contrast, appears low-impact at first glance, but its shorter lifespan and frequent replacements can take a greater toll on both the environment and the budget.
