Department representatives are in Bonn for the UN June Climate Meetings as preparations continue on the road to COP31 in Türkiye. There’s an emerging sense that the climate conversation is entering a new phase, where the focus is increasingly on how we accelerate delivery at the pace and scale required. Across many conversations, four themes stand out. ⚡ Electrification There is growing recognition that electrification sits at the centre of the climate, competitiveness and energy security agenda. The focus is increasingly on how we move from ambition to implementation. The discussion on transitioning away from fossil fuels is an integral part of this agenda, and the enthusiasm from civil society partners for making progress on this can be heard throughout the convention halls. For Europe in particular, electrification represents an opportunity not just to reduce emissions, but to strengthen resilience, enhance strategic autonomy and improve long-term competitiveness. 💰 Climate Finance There has been much discussion focused on how we mobilise finance at scale and ensure that resources reach the countries and communities that need them most. A key part of this equation is ensuring that those who need finance can access it. Australia’s proposal on access to climate finance is one to watch as we move towards Antalya. 🤝 The Action Agenda There is a strong appetite to focus on practical delivery and tangible outcomes. Governments, cities, businesses, investors and civil society all have a role to play. The challenge now is to turn plans into projects, commitments into investment and targets into real-world change — delivering meaningful impacts on people's lives. ♻️ Resilience and Circularity Conversations are also highlighting the important links between climate action and the circular economy. In an increasingly uncertain world, circularity can help make economies more secure, competitive and adaptable. IE and others met with the COP31 High-Level Champions, with a key focus for Türkiye being the transition towards zero waste. For Ireland, these discussions are particularly relevant as we prepare for our Presidency of the Council of the European Union. We look forward to working with partners across Europe and internationally to help advance practical solutions that support climate ambition, economic opportunity and resilience together. Much work remains ahead of COP31, but Bonn has reinforced an important point: there is still considerable momentum, and a determination to translate ambition into action. 🌍 #COP31 #ClimateAction #ClimatePolicy #EnergyTransition #Electrification #ClimateFinance #CircularEconomy #Resilience #CleanEnergy #EU #Ireland
